Embark on a Year of Discovery in Year 1! 

Welcome to Year 1! We’re thrilled to have your child join our vibrant learning community. This year, your child will be guided by our experienced teachers: Mr Overton-Priestley: 1OP and Mrs Ratheram: 1R. Supporting them will be our dedicated teaching assistants, Miss Welch and Mrs Carter. 

We have crafted a stimulating curriculum packed with exciting topics such as ‘Superheroes’, ‘Dinosaur Planet’ and ‘Paws, Claws and Whiskers’. Educational visits will further enrich your child’s understanding by visiting local places of interest and travelling further afield to enhance the learning experienced within the classroom. Inspiring guest speakers including members of our local community adds to our captivating curriculum. Children have opportunities to work both indoors and outdoors and through these engaging experiences, we aim to ignite a lifelong love of learning, nurture a thirst for knowledge, and create cherished memories for your child.  

Developing Essential Skills: 

Mathematics: Using the ‘White Rose Scheme’, your child will embark on a mathematical adventure, mastering fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving skills. They’ll explore concepts like place value (beyond 20!), addition and subtraction strategies, various units of measurement, and the fascinating world of 2D and 3D shapes. 

English: Through ‘Talk for Writing’, we build strong writing skills by crafting clear sentences, and confidently recounting stories and events. Speaking and listening skills will blossom through interactive role plays, group activities, and turn-taking. Additionally, the Read, Write Inc. program will equip them with the tools to excel in handwriting, phonics and reading. Each half term, we’ll delve into the captivating works of renowned authors like Roger Hargreaves, Roald Dahl, Mandy Ross, and Julia Donaldson. 

Science: Prepare to be amazed by the wonders of science! We’ll explore everything from the secrets of plant growth to the fascinating world of animals, including humans. Everyday materials and the magic of seasonal changes will also take centre stage. Learning will be brought to life through hands-on investigations and outdoor exploration whenever possible.   

Staying Active: 

Mark your calendars! Physical Education (PE) lessons will be held every Monday (1OP) and Tuesday (1R). Please ensure your child brings their PE kit on those days.
