Throughout Year 6 we cover some really fascinating topics from the human heart to ancient civilisations of Mexico.
For English, maths and science we will be following the national curriculum for Year 6.
Our Topics for the year are listed below:
Autumn 1 – Revolution
In this topic we will explore the industrial revolution during the Victorian era. As part of this we will compare and contrast the lives of both modern-day children and Victorian children as well as the vast differences between children of different classes in the Victorian era. The children will also look at artists such as William Morris, who is still a popular and influential person in our society. To help bring this exciting topic to life Year 6 will visit the Victorian town of Blists Hill in Telford. This memorable day helps to contextualise and bring to life an important period of history.
Autumn 2 – A Child’s War
A Child’s War looks at the significant events of World War II from a child’s perspective. They will learn why nations were fighting and why child evacuees made the long journey from their homes and families into unfamiliar surroundings. As well as delve into the complexities as to why Britain declared war on Germany. Weston Park (in Shropshire) allows our children to experience what being in a real Anderson shelter would have felt like, as well as explore the hardships of rationing and life on the front line as an injured soldier. This fantastic trip not only teaches Year 6 about World War II it teaches them life skills of working as a team, co-operation and the resilience people needed to survive.
Spring – Frozen Kingdoms
Welcome to the planet’s coldest lands, vast, wild, hostile territories, incredibly beautiful but often deadly. The children will research facts and figures on climate, temperature, habitats and eco-systems and compose engaging, insightful and factual reports about polar animals. The geographical skills that Year 6 cover are challenging, as part of this the children are asked to compare and contrast the two polar regions, learning about physical features such as; glaciers, tundra and icebergs.
Summer 1 – Blood Heart and SATs
During this topic the children will become surgeons, with the children having the opportunity to dissect animal hearts and examine veins, arteries and the chambers of the heart close up! Year 6 explore the complexities of the human heart and all the ways the heart (and the rest of the body) should be looked after.
Whilst looking at this topic Year 6 will be busy preparing for SATs week.
Summer 2 – Hola Mexico
During our final topic, the children will explore the unique country of Mexico, from its towering temples and stunning geography to its pulsing rhythms and fun-packed festivals. They will discover the mysterious world of the ancient Maya civilisation. As part of this topic, Year 6 design and make (using their sewing skills) masks inspired the Mexican festival Day of the Dead.
