Developing Essential Skills:
English: Through ‘Talk for Writing’, we build strong writing skills by crafting clear sentences, and confidently recounting stories and events. Speaking and listening skills will blossom through interactive role plays, group activities, and turn-taking. Each half term, we’ll delve into the captivating works of renowned authors such as Phillip Pullman and Roald Dahl.
Mathematics: Traveling through a mathematical journey children will master fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills. They will explore concepts of Place Value, securing their addition and subtraction knowledge. Children will be taught the 3, 4 and 8 multiplication tables and use the multiplication and division facts for them. Children will also cover fractions, statistics, measurement, length, height, mass, volume and time.

Autumn 1 – Scrumdiddlyumptious
Did you know that chocolate is actually grown on a cacao tree? Learn all about the process of growing, harvesting and producing the world’s favourite treat, from the rainforests of West Africa all the way to the Cadbury factory in Bournville during out history and design and technology topic!
Tantalise your tastebuds with a variety of seasonal vegetables as you create a scrumptious seasonal tart.
Autumn 2- Stone Age
Head back to a prehistoric time times during our history topic to gather berries and hunt down dinner. Unearth ancient objects and visit astonishing mythical monuments that reveal the secrets of an ancient time. Create gestural drawings through the medium of charcoal just like a Stone Age Hunter Gatherer.
Spring 1- Tremors
From violent volcanoes to earth-shattering earthquakes, Natural Disasters is a super exciting geography topic! We will learn about the geography of our planet by exploring how islands and continents form, and how volcanoes help life as well as destroy it. Combine art and craft using painting and sewing together, taking inspiration from artist Frank Bowling creating a natural disaster piece.
Spring 2- Gods and Mortals
Epic clashes between humanity and gods, fearsome beasts and handsome heroes are all to be found in our Ancient Greece history topic. Learn about Ancient Greece through the myths and Legends of Zeus and Theseus. In Design and Technology we will be using our prior learning from year 2 to draw, label, design and create a 3D castle using simple geometric shapes and nets.
Summer 1 – Flow
From humble beginnings, the river flows down the mountain and into the sea. Let’s explore majestic rivers such as The Ganges, Thames, Amazon and Nile and the animals and plants alongside them during our geography topic. Inspired by artists Leonardo Di Vinci and Xgaoc’o Xare we will use colour, shape and lines to create interesting prints exploring a variety of materials and rubbing techniques.
Summer 2 – Predator
Learn about creepy crocs and amazing alligators, the deadly assassin bug and the voracious Venus flytrap during our science topic. We will explore predators, prey and food chains, working out if fossils were of predatory creatures.
We will explore wearable technology in Design and Technology. We will write programmes and identify errors when testing codes as we follow basic design requirements using computer-aided design,
Modern Foreign Languages – French
At Heathlands our language journey is French which starts in year 3 – we will focus on listening, reading, speaking and writing as well as pronunciation and cultural awareness.
PESSPA:
As part of our Physical Education curriculum, we will work to develop the children’s skills through the following topics: Fundamental skills, Gymnastics, Dance, Ball Skills, Handball and Athletics.
Children will also have the opportunity to take part in School Sport’s competitions and events as well as engage in a wide variety of physical activity during break and lunch times.
Within these topics, we include a range of educational visits or visitors to immerse the children, in addition we will hold parent workshops which gives the children the opportunity to learn alongside their parents/carers.
Curriculum Promise: As well as following the National Curriculum, we enhance our learning via our unique Curriculum Promise which is split into three key sections:
Personal development- this goes beyond our PSHE lessons and supports children with wider contexts such as how to stay safe online and in person, positive relationships and careers.
People of note- we look at key contemporary and historical figures in the fields of literature, science and the arts.
Key events– here we calendar a range of key dates which we participate in such as National celebrations, religious festivals and elements linked to British Values.
