In English and Maths in Year 4, we follow the National Curriculum. We use the Talk for Writing approach for writing and use a variety of exciting texts such as Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, Charlotte’s Web, a Day in the Life of the Poo, Gnu and You and the Saga of Erik the Viking for our reading. In our journey for Maths, we will master fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills. We will explore various mathematical representations in this process including pictorial, concreate and abstract.
In Science we learn about all about States of Matter, Animals (including humans), Living Things and their Habitats, Electricity and Sound.
Our topics in Year 4 are:
Autumn 1 / 2 –
I am Warrior – We look at the key changes and events of historical periods that can be placed on a timeline. We learn about leaders such as Julius Caesar and Boudicca and their significant achievements. We look at the Anglo-Saxon and the Roman invasions. In geography, we look at significant rivers, significant mountains and mountain ranges of the UK.
Spring 1 –
Road Trip USA – We use map skills to navigate around some of the most famous landmarks in the USA. We study the Iroquois tribe, looking at their customs and traditions.
Spring 2 –
Burps, Bottoms and Bile- We are looking at the digestive system and the processes involved in food travelling through bodies. The important role of saliva in aiding digestion and helping protect teeth and gums. Taking dental impressions and test the effects of sugary substances on teeth.
Summer 1 –
Traders and Raiders- We will explore who the Anglo-Saxons were and how they brandished their swords as they invaded Britain’s shores. Sail back to the Dark Ages, where battles were rife, and fear reigned. We will find out about the lives of the Saxons, including how they lived and where they came from. Meet the bloodthirsty Vikings from Scandinavia – never had such terror swept the land.
Summer 2 –
Playlist- We will find out about instruments, the sounds they make… A bash? A crash? A shake, a rattle or a low, bass hum. Discover how sounds are made and which sounds travel the furthest.
Curriculum Promise
During the year, Year 4 take part in many special days including Diwali, Mother’s Day, World Book Day, Number Day and Safer Internet Day. We also have a Roman visitor come into school, a visit to Buddhist Temple and take part in the Music for Youth event at Symphony Hall. Year 4 are responsible for the Easter Performance.
In the summer term, Year 4 take part in the national times table check. This is an online test, checking the knowledge of times tables up to 12x table with 25 randomly generated questions.
Year 4 also go swimming from Spring 2 until the end of the summer term.
